TUTORIAL: Sewn binding

In this tutorial you will learn how to create a simple pop-up section for a book. The section can then be inserted between the pages of the students' book to create a very colourful and interesting effect.

Step 1: What you need

  • ribbon/thread

  • pages of the book

  • scissors

  • something pointy such as a sharp pencil, craft knife, or even a needle.

Tip: An easier (and safer) way to make the holes would be to use a puncher.

Step 2: The sewn binding

Make a small hole at the top and bottom of the book. (If the book is tall then a number of holes may be needed)

Tip: If the book is very big then it is a good idea to bind small sections and then join them all together.

Step 3: Tying off

Thread a piece of ribbon through both holes and tie-off to create a bow.

Tip: If using thread you may want to make smaller holes. You will also need to double-up the thread to make it stronger.

Step 4: The finished product

Once the book has been attatched together it is ready to go and can be decorated immediately.
